Darlington Crematorium & New Chapel

The Challenge

Align, one of the North Yorkshire Council companies, have been appointed to provide comprehensive services from RIBA Stage 1 for the conversion of an existing crematorium and chapel building into separate new chapel and refurbished crematorium premises. This involved refurbishing the aging West Cemetery crematorium, including demolition and the installation of new equipment to replace the outdated cremators, as well as creating a new chapel complete with car parking facilities.

The Solution

The existing building is nestled within a Grade II listed park presented a unique challenge. Our design had to strike a delicate balance between sensitivity to the historic context and a contemporary feel. We strategically incorporated generous glazing to infuse natural daylight and offer serene garden views, fostering a tranquil and uplifting atmosphere. Addressing both pedestrian and vehicular circulation was pivotal to the facility’s functionality, with careful consideration given to auto-tracked vehicle paths throughout the grounds.

Moreover, we faced a tight schedule to meet time- sensitive funding requirements. This necessitated rigorous coordination through meetings and seamless information exchange among our team, the client, and the specialist’s equipment supplier. Implementing a BIM approach using Revit, we expedited the project from inspection to a full Stage 3 planning application in just four months.

At Align, our dedicated team of architects and technologists collaborates closely with clients to transform their aspirations into reality. With a track record of exceeding expectations across diverse sectors and project sizes, we take pride in delivering responsive solutions. Our partnership approach ensures that we bring genuine added value to every project, consistently delivering the vision we’ve crafted together.
