Whitehaven town centre regeneration project reaches major milestone
An exciting project to regenerate Whitehaven town centre has reached a major milestone.
Architects from Align Property Partners have been working alongside Cumberland Council and contractor Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd on the £450,000 improvement works for Green Market and Duke Street.
On Friday (June 13), a community celebration was held to mark the official opening of the newly-refurbished areas which hope to create a more inviting and culturally enriched space for residents, businesses and visitors to the town.
Improvements include stylish new seating, fresh planting, and upgraded litter bins—all designed to boost functionality and appearance.
Standout features are the addition of historical interpretation boards, developed to showcase and celebrate the rich heritage of Green Market and the Market Hall and two commemorative stones, created by the Whitehaven Heritage Action Group.
Designed by our architects, the scheme strikes a careful balance between modern usability and historical preservation. The project aims to increase footfall, support local trade, and honour Whitehaven’s cultural and historical legacy.
Principal architectural technologist at Align, Malcolm Jennings, said: “From the outset of this project, we aimed to respect and celebrate the history and heritage of the local area, whilst at the same time upgrade the space and make it more inviting for everyone.
“It’s been wonderful to work alongside the council and Thomas Armstrong Ltd on this project, and we are delighted with the outcome which has been the result of months of collaborative work.”
At Friday’s community celebration, local residents, businesses, councillors and other guests took the opportunity to explore the newly transformed area.
Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, said: “This has been an exciting step forward for Whitehaven. By enhancing the public realm and preserving the area’s proud history, we are not just investing in infrastructure—we are investing in people, place, and pride.
“This project shows Cumberland Council’s commitment to creating vibrant, community-first spaces where our local businesses can thrive, and our heritage can shine. I hope everyone comes out to see the improvements and celebrate what we have achieved together.”
