Praise from budding architect after memorable work experience

A budding architect has praised Align Property Partners’ work experience programme after spending the week with the team in Cumbria.

Seventeen-year-old Peter Wilson attends an academy school in Kendal and wanted to find out more about architecture and building surveying.

He spent five days working in our Kendal office, spending time with the building surveying department as well as the wider civil and structural engineering teams.

He started the week meeting with client and contractors, undertaking site inspections including locating defects on a flat roof and assisting in the final inspection of external decoration works to a school.

He also used his strong maths and computer science skills to assist with site measurement and AutoCAD drawings – whilst being given a fascinating insight into the career pathways open after sixth-form education.

“I would recommend the work experience programme to anybody looking into the building industry,” Peter said following his time with Align.

“I enjoyed going to visit the sites and learning how to use AutoCAD, and the whole week has especially helped me to learn about architectural apprenticeships and how they work.”

Peter is one of 19 local students who have gained valuable work experience with Align since the start of last year.

As shown with our popular apprenticeship scheme, we are passionate about inspiring the next generation and giving young people the chance to maximise their potential.

His mentor for the week, Align building surveyor Phil Hope, said: “Peter acted in a professional manner throughout and was keen to voice his opinion, offering sound reasoned advice.

“When on site, he took the initiative to start taking accurate measurements to help pinpoint a section of water ingress via a concealed rooflight above a fixed suspended ceiling.

“Peter possesses good problem-solving skills, mathematical skills and showed intuitive capability with using AutoCAD and measurement, which already puts him in a good position for a career in architecture.

“I would recommend that Peter continues to review his further education options upon completion of sixth-form, the opportunities that are available to him and possible apprenticeships as discussed with members of Align during his placement.”
