Construction work on new coroner’s court in Workington begins
Work to relocate a county coroner’s court in Cumbria has started this week.
Align’s team of engineers and architects have been heavily involved in the design of the new modern facilities within Allerdale House in Workington.
The current base in Cockermouth no longer meets the need of the services due to its lack of space, accessibility issues and being an ageing building.
As a result, Cumberland Council has been looking to repurpose part of Allerdale House to create a large main court room with jury facilities, a secondary court, three family and meeting rooms, a waiting area and reception.
There will also be modern offices and welfare facilities for the HM Coroner and the support team, created across the ground and first floors.
The construction which is being led by Thomas Armstrong Ltd started on Monday (June 30) and is expected to be completed in November this year.
Principal architectural technologist at Align, Malcolm Jennings, said: “We are very proud to be involved in this project, and it is a hugely exciting time with construction having now begun.
“It has been a real team effort to get to this point and we are looking forward to seeing our vision for the building come to life.”
In 2024 there were 1,570 deaths reported to the Coroner in Cumbria, with 450 inquests held.
