Architect shares pride in Maryport Activity Centre transformation
The senior architect behind the recent transformation of a family activity centre in Cumbria has shared her pride in the project.
Maryport Activity Centre reopened its doors two months ago after a refurbishment which forms part of Cumberland Council’s £12 million regeneration of the town.
The venue, close to the historic harbour, now has bigger and better facilities for the community – with a spectacular adventure play attraction at the centre’s heart for young visitors.
The space looks to bring Maryport’s history to life with a Roman watchtower and Northern Lights display, along with seaside wildlife and shipbuilding games.
A new multi-purpose studio space and party rooms have also been created for residents and visitors to enjoy, while the centre’s gym and fitness centre has been expanded – with brand new changing facilities created for the first time.
There is also a new café serving drinks and snacks.
Senior architect at Align Property Partners, Svea Polster, worked on the project and has today shared a series of images from inside the centre.
She said: “This is an amazing new facility that caters for local communities. I am delighted to have played a part in its transformation.
“It was a team effort from start to finish, working with main contractor Thomas Armstrong Construction, and from the outset our vision was to create a top-quality facility that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people.
“Whether it’s the play area that’s hugely popular with children, gym and fitness users who are benefiting from the upgraded equipment and new changing facilities, or the wider community who can utilise the studio space or party rooms, it’s all positive.
“I think the teamwork and collaboration between a number of people is evident when you see the extent of the transformation, and how the facility has been transformed.
“I take enormous pride as an architect who was involved in the project, taking initial designs in their infancy, tweaking them and then seeing that vision progress and ultimately come to life.
“It’s a hugely satisfying job and I hope families continue to enjoy the facility for many years to come.”
Leader of Cumberland Council, Councillor Mark Fryer, praised the early impact that the activity centre has had.
He said: “It has been fantastic to see how popular the new attractions have been at Maryport Activity Centre.
“This really is a venue that Maryport can be proud of. It complements the new Shiver Me Timbers play area and skate park on the Promenade perfectly in terms of the age range it caters for and will be a year-round destination for locals and visitors alike.”
