Pedestrianisation scheme in Selby
Align Property Partners and NY Highways undertook a project to improve pedestrian areas on New Lane in Selby, which is in the town’s busy shopping area.
The work started in November 2023 and was completed in March 2024.
The brief
The client, the former Selby District Council, wanted to rejuvenate the high street in Selby to attract more visitors and help the local economy.
To do this, improvements were required to pavements and roads in busy pedestrian area in order to improve accessibility to New Lane as well as ensuring the aesthetics complimented that of the buildings in the surrounding area.
The solution:
Align and NY Highways collaborated to provide a plan of work that met and exceeded the client’s brief. The work on New Lane involved:
- Widening the footways,
- Replacing the existing kerbs with conservation kerbs,
- Replacing the existing asphalt carriageway with a new shared surface asphalt that compliments the new Yorkstone footway paving,
- Introducing tactile paving at pedestrian crossing points,
- Replacing the narrow, worn uneven tarmac footways with Yorkstone paving flags, and;
- Repositioning the road gullies to accommodate the wider footways.
Throughout the works, access was maintained to the business premises using temporary walkways and alternative footways to ensure that disruption was reduced a minimum.
The result:
The project has delivered an improved surface for access by pedestrians, including the wider pavements, crossing points and the new pedestrian crossing point. These improvements facilitate the access to all the businesses and properties within this length of New Lane.
Yorkstone paving, alongside the conservation kerbs, has enhanced the visual aspects of the area and has created a warm and welcome atmosphere to a location that previously appeared narrow and dominated by vehicles.
The project has demonstrated the value in a good collaborative partnership between Align and NY Highways, which can produce a high-quality service that exceeds the requirements of the client whilst also achieving value for money.
Managing director of NY Highways, Jamie Crumlish, said: “We’ve worked with Align for a few years and collaborating with them has led to the completion of some exceptional projects, with the Selby New Lane scheme being just one of them.”
