Job Description

Service: To carry out the role of a Principal Designer Adviser / CDM Adviser

Job Purpose

To provide a variety of services including those relating to delivery of CDM including preparation of  Pre-Construction Information documents, F10 Notification, Health & Safety Files and reviewing and challenging design risk management drawings and forms.

To review clients’ CDM delivery and implement policies and strategies to improve service delivery including upskilling of key staff, conducting reviews and undertaking site safety visits to confirm compliance with new strategies.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of the CDM team within the multi-disciplinary organisation
  • The preparation of Pre-Construction Information documents, F10 Notifications and    Health & Safety Files across a number of sectors including education, blue-light, corporate and heritage.
  • Attendance at selected design team meetings.
  • Undertake reviews of clients existing policies procedures and practice in relation to CDM service delivery particularly with respect to the client and designer duties.
  • Identify current strengths and weaknesses and propose improvement activities.
  • Conduct reviews to provide assurance that revised procedures are being implemented.
  • Visit sites to attend meetings, carry out assurance inspections. Note: regional coverage of projects within Cumbria anticipated.
  • Be committed to maintaining an annual programme of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Support local and national sales and bids as appropriate.

Essential on Appointment

  • CMaPS (IMaPS or AaPS considered but candidates must be prepared to gain CMaPS)
  • CMIOSH or Grad IOSH (or working towards)
  • Thorough knowledge of CDM 2015 particularly client and designer duties.
  • 5+ years experience as a CDM Advisor / Health & Safety Adviser working at senior level, client facing and working on own initiative.
  • Experience with producing Pre-Construction Information documents for tender.
  • Experience of managing collation of Health & Safety Files
  • Has a working knowledge of delivery of the CDM Regulations and can describe competence with reasonable accuracy and completeness.
  • Has practical experience of applying their knowledge and competence elements in a number of projects across different sectors.
  • Works under minimal supervision and completes some tasks using own judgement, but overall supervision is required, work is reviewed for adequacy on completion.
  • Appreciates complex situations and obtains assistance from others to complete tasks when required.
  • Has the experience of breaking down actions to achieve an overall goal.
  • Experience of working closely with other disciplines to produce coordinated deliverables.
  • Robust construction knowledge
  • Team player, outgoing, flexible, enthusiastic and ambitious with a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • A high standard of technical delivery.
  • Can demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of professional ethics. Are able to describe examples where they have applied this knowledge during their work while advising clients.
  • Proficiency with the use of the Microsoft Office Suite.

Technical Skills and Ability

  • Proficiency with the use of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with producing CDM documents for tender.
  • Provide advice on Health and Safety issues throughout the design and construction period of projects, taking into account the requirements of CDM 2015.
  • Ability to coordinate risk management process during design team meetings.
  • Ability to assess clients performance under CDM and develop and implement strategies to improve service delivery
  • Proficient at upskilling staff in their duties under CDM as designers.
  • Able to challenge designers on their design solutions and possess good understanding of multi-disciplinary design process and RIBA stages.

Desirable on Appointment

  • BOHS P405 Qualification.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate Project Management qualification.
  • NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
