Folly! Installations Opened to the Public – April 2018
On Friday 27th April 2018, the National Trust officially opened the Folly! exhibition, part of the contemporary art programme, to the public at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. Hannah Clayton and Tamsin Christison, from our architectural department, had a sneak preview of Foster Carter’s winning design which is installed in the water garden, alongside three other installations designed by international artists and architects.
The Folly! design competition was organised by NYSA in partnership with the National Trust. Hannah and Tamsin had the pleasure of being involved from the beginning with the workshops, right through to seeing Foster’s winning design being realised and installed. The photograph below shows the design in situ but we would highly recommend you pay a visit to experience the rain cloud for yourselves.
Further details are on Twitter under the #Folly2018 handle and on @fountainsabbey and @nysarchitects accounts.

Le Cateau School in Catterick is now complete April 2018
It’s always extremely gratifying when we receive a vote of thanks for the work we have undertaken in particular when it also has such a positive impact upon those who use the facilities. Therefore we would not hesitate to share such positive comments received from the Headteacher at Le Cateau School following the handover of their recent project: “I write following the successful completion of the development at Le Cateau and firstly wanted to say a huge thank you to yourself and the team at Align Property Partners for making the whole process a pleasure to be a part of. The pupils love the surroundings and comment on a daily basis about how lucky they are to have the new facility. The hall is now a stunning center piece to the school. the comment I often hear is ‘wow’. The service has been first class and made the project a joy to be involved with. Communication has been key; the involvement in every decision has allowed us to ‘own’ the project and the support has been superb. In conclusion, the whole community is thrilled with what you have done for us and we have loved working alongside you and the design team. Credit goes to you Tamsin for the way you have managed the project and coordinated everything. A fantastic job”!

Folly Competition for Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal January 2018
We would like to offer our congratulations to Foster Carter, aged 11, from Le Cateau Community Primary School, who was successful with his design in the recent Folly ideas competition for Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. Well done Foster! The completion was run by The National Trust in association with the North Yorkshire Society of Architects.
His design for “Raining Cloud” was picked out from over 1800 entries because of it’s originality and sense of fun. Foster’s design uses a 4.2m wood frame to hold up a ‘cloud’ and will be situated at Silver Pond in the water garden. This fourth installation, which is being finalised with the help of Stage One, will launch alongside three other designs from 28 April – 4 November 2018.
We would like to also thank both Hannah Clayton and Tamsin Christison who generously donated their time to help Foster and his classmates develop their ideas during workshops held at the school last year.

About the NYSA (North Yorkshire Surveyors Association)
The NYSA is over 80 years old and has its origins in the 1920s. It was established by the NRCC specifically for staff who were engaged in highway activities. The aim was to fill a gap between some of the established highway and engineering institutions such as the ICE and the IHT (now known as the CIHT). The aims of the Association in those early days were no different to its current aims or being part social and part professional. Providing CPD and other technical learning events.
The NYSA Today
The way in which the NYSA has evolved will not be dissimilar to the way in which other similar organisations have evolved. Another recent development has been the integration of the private sector into the association, which includes consultants and supply chain contractors.
As more clients are now looking for multi-disciplined delivery the association has now expanded its audience to not only highways but property and asset management.
Align Property Partners exhibited a display stand capturing some of the excellent work they are currently providing for NYCC’s County Hall refurbishment, North Yorkshire Moors National Park Land of Iron project and a number of School projects.

School Folly Design Competition 4th October 2017
Align Property Partners in association with North Yorkshire Society of Architects and the National Trust, recently took part in a design competition for North Yorkshire primary school pupils aged 9-11 years. The aim was to create an art installation that will be built alongside professionally designed installations in the water garden at Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal from May to October 2018. Align Property Partners hosted three separate architectural workshops at Colburn and Le Cateau Primary Schools, to provide a background to the design competition whilst presenting an insight into architecture and the built environment. The pupils also developed their own imaginative folly designs under the guidance and watchful eyes of Hannah Clayton and Tamsin Christison. The workshops delivered at both schools were hugely enjoyed by the pupils and staff alike. Thanks to both Hannah and Tamsin for taking time out from their schedules to facilitate this and we know that they wish each school every success in their efforts to have their work on display next year. Further information about workshop sessions at other North Yorkshire schools can be seen on twitter at #Folly2018 @fountainsabbey as well as @nysarchitects.
